Mario M. Laganao, Jr.
At forty years old, with six years of experience in the classroom, the life of a Teacher I is a tapestry woven with moments of profound joy and deep struggles. As I reflect on my journey, the challenges of moving forward while living below my means and enduring financial difficulties are ever-present. Yet, amid these trials, my passion for teaching remains undiminished, fueled by the strength and commitment to bring education to my students.
The financial landscape for many teachers is fraught with difficulties. As a Teacher I, the salary often falls short of meeting basic needs, let alone providing for any semblance of comfort or security. Living below my means has become a necessity, rather than a choice. Each month is a balancing act, juggling bills, groceries, and other essential expenses. Unexpected costs, such as medical emergencies or household repairs, add an extra layer of stress, stretching an already tight budget to its limits.
There have been moments when I questioned my decision to remain in a profession that seems to undervalue my contributions. The prospect of a side job is always on the horizon, not out of desire but out of necessity. Yet, despite these financial strains, the idea of leaving teaching has never truly taken hold. The joy and fulfillment derived from shaping young minds and witnessing their growth provide a counterbalance to the monetary struggles.
The passion to teach is a beacon that guides me through the darkest times. There is an indescribable satisfaction in seeing a student grasp a challenging concept or light up with enthusiasm over a new discovery. These moments reaffirm my purpose and rekindle my dedication. Teaching is not merely a job; it is a calling that transcends financial reward.
This passion is rooted in the belief that education is transformative. Every lesson plan, every classroom interaction, and every after-school tutoring session is an opportunity to make a difference. My students, with their diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives, inspire me to continually improve and adapt my teaching methods. Their successes, big and small, are shared victories that fuel my resolve to persist despite personal hardships.
Bringing education to my students requires not only passion but also strength and resilience. The classroom is a dynamic environment, demanding constant energy and attention. Each day presents new challenges—students facing their own struggles, administrative hurdles, and the ever-evolving landscape of educational standards. Navigating these challenges requires a steadfast commitment to the profession and to the students who rely on me.
This strength is derived from a deep sense of responsibility and care for my students. They look to me not only for knowledge but also for guidance, support, and encouragement. Being a reliable figure in their lives means consistently showing up with patience, empathy, and a willingness to go the extra mile. This unwavering commitment is what sustains me, even when external circumstances are daunting.
Despite the financial difficulties and the constant balancing act of living below my means, there is hope and determination in my outlook. Each new school year brings fresh faces and renewed opportunities to make a positive impact. The bonds formed with students and the progress they make are constant reminders of why I chose this path.
Advocating for better pay and working conditions remains an ongoing effort, both individually and collectively with my peers. The support of fellow teachers, administrators, and the broader community is crucial in striving for improvements that can ease the financial burdens we face. While systemic changes are slow and challenging, every small step forward is a victory.
As a 40-year-old Teacher I with six years of teaching experience, my journey is a testament to the resilience and dedication required to thrive in a profession marked by financial hardship. The passion to teach and the strength to bring education to my students are the forces that propel me forward. Through perseverance and unwavering commitment, I continue to embrace the challenges, find joy in the classroom, and hold onto the hope that our collective efforts will pave the way for a more sustainable and fulfilling future for all educators.
